The next issue with cholesterol is saturated fat. The more saturated fat you eat, the worse your cholesterol will be.
Not all cholesterol is bad. You have the bad cholesterol, LDL and the good cholesterol, HDL.
If you take total cholesterol divided by HDL you will have a number that tells you your risk factor for heart disease.
